Bess Beetle

The Bess Beetle is just over an inch in length.  Found throughout the eastern US, this beetle feeds on decaying and rotting wood, often having an extensive gallery in an old stump or log.  This species often has a short horn protruding from the center of the head, although the photo above does not show one.  This horn results in another common name, Horned Passalus.  The body is very shiny and slick-looking, resulting once again in another common name, Patent-leather Beetle.  These beetles communicate through clicks and squeaks made by rubbing their wings along the abdomen.
